Master in Information Technology Management (MITM)

In response to the demands of today’s Information Technology (IT) professional, tech-skilled with critical business thinking employees are required like never before. The Master of Information Technology and
Management provides students with an enhanced understanding of the business context and technical developments shaping contemporary information and communications technology (ICT) and equips them to meet the challenges of working in the IT industry. The programme will prepare students for a broad range of careers in management like IT manager and director, IT consultants in public and private organisations as well as IT Entrepreneurs. With a Master of Information Technology and Management,
the students are able to assess an in-depth understanding of knowledge, mastery of skills and research methods related to the field of Information Technology; and devise IT solutions to fulfil requirements and industry.

Entry Requirement

Malaysian Applicant

The minimum entry requirements for the programme are as follows:

i) a Bachelor's Degree (Level 6 Malaysian Qualifications Framework, MQF) or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2. 75, as accepted by the Senate; OR

ii) a Bachelor's Degree (Level 6 MQF) or its equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and not meeting CGPA of 2. 75, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment process; OR

iii) a Bachelor's Degree (Level 6 MQF) or its equivalent, with CGPA less than 2.50, with a minimum of 5 years working experience in the relevant field may be accepted; OR

iv) Other equivalent qualifications approved by the Senate.

International Applicant

The minimum entry requirements for the programme are as follows:

i) a Bachelor's Degree (Level 6 MQF) or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2. 75, as accepted by the Senate; OR

ii) a Bachelor's Degree (Level 6 MQF) or its equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and not meeting CGPA of 2. 75, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment process; OR

iii) a Bachelor's Degree (Level 6 MQF) or its equivalent, with CGPA less than 2.50, with a minimum of 5 years working experience in the relevant field may be accepted; OR

iv) Other equivalent qualifications approved by the Senate.

AND

a minimum International English Language Testing System (IEL TS) Score of 5.5 or its equivalent (example: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)-525; TOEFL Computer Test -196; TOEFL Internet Test 69-70) is required.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLO)

The programme shall produce graduates who are:

able to obtain advanced Information Technology knowledge, skills and aptitude to meet the industry needs;
being equipped with advanced Information Technology theoretical principles and scientific methods to create effective solutions to problems; and
able to demonstrate professionalism, as well as social and ethical considerations of their computing solutions in the global context.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLO)

Upon graduating from this program, the students are able to:

assess an in-depth understanding of knowledge, mastery of skills and research methods related to the field of Information Technology;
demonstrate IT competency in solving research problems and case studies;
demonstrate social skills and responsibilities related to Information Communication Technology;
evaluate and make decision as an individual and as a member of a team in a manner consistent with ethical and professional standards;
communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to others including peers, both technical and non-technical stakeholders;
enhance capacity building through leadership with significant degree of personal responsibility and autonomy under broad direction on well-defined and non-routine work activities performed in a variety of contexts;
devise IT solutions to support industry requirements and needs;
critically evaluate, analyse and synthesise a complex issue or theory from the Information Technology discipline by showing intellectual independence, personal judgement and the ability to apply self-learning strategies;
integrate a wide range of resources with various digital applications to address issues in research and practice related to Information Technology and management;
demonstrate skills to analyse numerical data;
explore and engage in activities relating to risk analysis and social entrepreneurship leading to communities

Course Synopsis

a) Core Courses

ICT Infrastructures

The course covers the ICT infrastructure components such as transmission media, Internet protocols and addressing, switching, design and different type of broadband access technologies. This course also provides practical in-network laboratory to underpinning the knowledge on addressing and network programming.

Professional Computing Ethics

This course explores ethics related to information technology, highlighting issues and ethical use of IT as a communication medium. It also explains the risks and issues in computer misuse. It also includes an understanding of intellectual property related to the use and dissemination of information in IT.

Computational Thinking

This course is designed to for students with little or no programming experience. It aims to build an understanding of computational thinking concepts, approaches and tools. Computational thinking is a fundamental skill that focuses on the process of abstraction and combines mathematical and engineering thinking when solving problems. The skill can be applied in all disciplines such as mathematics, science and humanities. Students taking this course will discover key concepts of computational thinking and apply the skill for solving case studies.

Research Methodology

This course will provide Computer Science and Information Technology students with research skills, facilitating a smooth transition to graduate studies and research. The course spans multiple elements including research proposal writing, literature review, writing and presentation skills, and general considerations for experiment design and planning.

Business Intelligence

This course is designed to provide an overview of business intelligence and its practical applications in the business environment. The concepts, methodologies, techniques and applications covered in this course can assist the business managers in learning to extract business intelligence from organizational data sets from different domains to support the decision making process.

Project Management

This course provides students with an understanding of IT project management concepts and principles, based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). The course focuses on the activities in the areas of Coordinating Knowledge, Core Knowledge and Facilitating Knowledge. Project management ensures that project requirements are met by applying techniques, tools, skills and knowledge to project activities.

b) Elective Courses

Digital Economy

This course provides a study on the theories and practices of the emerging digital economy. The students will be exposed to issues of technologies and infrastructure, digital transformation, innovation, and strategy in the digital economy. Case studies and demonstration of technologies employed globally will be used to sensitize the student's awareness of Digital Economy.

Information Technology Strategy and Governance

This course is designed to develop understanding of information systems, strategy and governance frameworks. In particular, this course emphasise on the organisational controls, audits, standards and issues associated with measuring performance, demonstrating value and minimising risk.

Data Visualization

This course will provide the opportunity for learners to learn skills and methodologies to practice and engage in pattern discovery methods, discuss analysis of pattern and evaluation measurements, and study diverse visualisation patterns on maps, text and graphs data. By the end of this course, students are able to present other forms of structuring and visualising scientific data.

Database Management

This Course expose students to knowledge in database systems and basic database management. The student will learn the theory and practical skills of designing a relational database and using Structured Query Language (SQL) for basic database management and data manipulation.

Cyber Security

This course covers various types of attacks and defences related to cyber security. Particularly, the content includes ways to secure equipment and data, prevent the steal of personal information and implement a secure environment within an organisation. The course is more focused on the managerial level perspective rather than technical implementation.

Quantitative Analysis for Business Decisions

This course covers quantitative approaches in organization. Students will gain an understanding of modelling and rational approaches to decision-making and their contribution to organizational effectiveness. Analysis and communication are emphasized by real world applications and cases.

Web Authoring

This course covers from the basic understanding of the methods and techniques of developing a simple to moderately complex web site. The students will be introduced to the use of web authoring tools in designing and maintaining the web site. At the end of the course, the students will be equipped with the practical skills to design and develop a website for a case study small business or organization of choice.

Information Retrieval

This course covers the standard concepts in information retrieval such as documents, queries, collections, and relevance. The course includes approaches for efficient indexing, querying approaches, and modern techniques for crawling data from the web. Advanced topic covered are application areas such as document summarization, cross-lingual retrieval, and image search.

Social Informatics

This course covers the interdisciplinary body of research dedicated to studying the design, uses, and effects of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in a society and cultural context. This course requires students to go beyond the "technical" aspects of ICTs and consider the social relations that are an integral part of designing, adopting and deploying a technology or technological system.
