Dean's Message

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

Selamat Sejahtera

First and foremost, Alhamdulillah to Allah swt, for giving us the best health and condition to continue our task. Welcome to the faculty’s website, feel free to explore many of our interesting programmes and events all year round from our faculty.

Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, or FCSIT, offers bachelor’s degree and postgraduate programmes that are accredited and continuously reviewed by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). In addition to that, our programmes are also reviewed by appointed external examiners from universities and industries.

Our academic curriculum promotes both theory and technical skills, and applies critical and analytical skills in computer science. The curriculum also emphasizes on soft skills throughout our students’ learning process. This is evident in the bachelor’s degree programme, where one of its core course inculcate soft skills through service learning activities. Students in this course serve local community through IT projects such as developing websites, systems, corporate video or basic IT training. As of now, the faculty has implemented more than 120 service learning projects with undergraduate students at various villages and schools in Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Lundu and Sibu.

As one of the leading universities in Sarawak, FCSIT offers postgraduate programmes by coursework or by research. Academic staff in the faculty has various expertise in the field of computer science and technology that can train students to discover new knowledge and propose feasible solutions in various domains. Candidates of Doctor Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MSc.) can work in any of our research clusters, which are Affordable Ubiquitous Access (AUA), Software Engineering Workbench (SEW), Knowledge Technology (KT) and Computational Modelling (COMO). On the other hand, candidates that prefer to take up 1-year master by coursework programmes can opt to take up Master in Information System Management (MITM) or Master in Computer Science (MCS). These programmes are very suitable for working adults who wish to advance their knowledge in IT and computer science.

In the faculty, we have established two Centre of Excellence, known as Tourism Innovation Center (TIC), currently led by Prof Dr Wang Yin Chai and Big Data Analytic and Visualisation which is led by Associate Prof Dr Dayang Nur Fatimah.
Besides that, three community and research laboratories are supported through grants; Makerspace@UNIMAS, a collaborative workspace fully equipped with digital making tools for students, myCapsule, the first Gamification Centre in Malaysia currently led by Associate Prof Dr Jacey Lynn Minoi, Heritage and Culture Lab, an innovation centre for improving heritage products by local community using technology. This lab is currently managed by Dr Dayang Hanani Abang Ibrahim and Dr Nadianatra Musa.

I hope that FCSIT continuously grow and stamp a significant existence to the University, State, Country and to the World. Come and join us in this beautiful journey!
